The Original Waffle Shop North

Overview

Walking into The Original Waffle Shop North for the first time feels a bit like stepping into a shared memory for State College locals. I still remember my first visit during a cold fall morning, when the windows were fogged up and every table seemed full. The line moved fast, the coffee never stopped flowing, and the smell of fresh batter on a hot griddle set the tone before I even opened the menu. Located at 1229 N Atherton St, State College, PA 16803, United States, this diner-style spot has built a reputation that goes far beyond just waffles.

What stands out immediately is how the kitchen operates like a well-rehearsed team. Watching the cooks flip waffles, crack eggs, and plate orders with precision shows years of practice. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, consistency is one of the top reasons diners return to independent restaurants, and that idea plays out here every single morning. Orders come out exactly as requested, whether it’s a crisp Belgian waffle or a loaded omelet with home fries cooked just right.

The menu itself is broad without feeling overwhelming. While waffles are clearly the star, regulars know the real fun is mixing and matching. One of my go-to orders is the waffle topped with strawberries and whipped cream, paired with a side of thick-cut bacon. Friends who visit for the first time often comment on how generous the portions are, something echoed in countless online reviews. Many mention leaving full enough to skip lunch altogether, which aligns with a Cornell University food service study noting that portion satisfaction strongly influences positive diner feedback.

Beyond breakfast, the lunch options deserve attention too. Sandwiches, burgers, and classic diner plates give the place an all-day appeal. During a weekday visit last spring, I spoke with a Penn State alum who stops in every time he’s back in town. He told me it’s the familiar flavors that pull him in, especially the soups made in-house. That kind of loyalty doesn’t happen by accident; it’s built through years of dependable quality and honest cooking.

Service is another piece of the puzzle. The staff moves quickly but never feels rushed. Servers remember regulars, refill coffee without being asked, and manage busy weekends with calm efficiency. Hospitality researchers from Michigan State University often point out that personal interaction has as much impact on guest satisfaction as food quality, and this place nails that balance. Even during peak hours, there’s a sense that customers matter, not just their orders.

Reviews across multiple platforms consistently highlight the same themes: hearty food, fast service, and a welcoming atmosphere. While no restaurant is perfect-wait times can stretch during football weekends-the team handles crowds better than most. It’s worth noting that parking can be tight during rush hours, something first-time visitors should plan for, but the experience inside usually makes up for the minor inconvenience.

Over the years, I’ve recommended this spot to visiting family, coworkers, and even out-of-town clients looking for a reliable local meal. Every time, the feedback comes back the same: it feels authentic. In a dining landscape where trends come and go, this diner sticks to what works. That grounded approach, combined with skilled execution and community trust, explains why it continues to thrive while newer places fade away.

We had the most impressive young waitress! Whoever raised this young lady did it right!! She had the best manners, personality and very good customer service skills! Her name was Maddie. She came straight to our table with 2 pots of hot coffee (reg & decaf) and was so attentive the whole time. All of our food was so good and nice portion sizes. We came for breakfast, I had the Avocado toast with and egg on top and a side of fruit and it was delicious. The rest of our group had a waffle with strawberries & whipped cream, BLT and meat lovers omelette. Everything was delicious. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. We got there around 9:15 and got right in, when we left around 10:30 there was a line to get in.

Had an incredible brunch here. Burger was perfectly cooked and fries were nice and crispy. My wife’s omelet was very flavorful and the buttermilk pancakes were excellent. Homefries had a ton of flavor and didn’t taste like wet potatoes like some other places. Even though it was very busy the wait staff were kind. I absolutely adore this place and highly recommend it. Come early though as the lines can get crazy!

The food and service were amazing. I had eggs, corned beef hash, and potatoes along with a blueberry waffle, and everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. My wife ordered the eggs Florentine, which she really enjoyed. Overall, a great spot for a delicious and satisfying meal with friendly service. We’ll definitely be back.

Sarah our waitress was phenomenal. My wife during college would come here about once a month and she has shown us what a great place for breakfast this is. I had the S3 which was plenty of food.

If you're ever in University Park Pennsylvania, The Original Waffle Shop is one of the best breakfast places in town. I highly recommend you come to this location to eat the food. It was delicious. The price was perfect, the servings were huge, the customer service was amazing, and I couldn't have asked for better.
